Good morning, my friends!
You ever feel like life’s winds are a little too strong? That’s how it felt for me this morning as I stepped onto the beach. The gusts were intense, the waves were wild, and honestly—it reminded me of life sometimes.
Sometimes the “waves” of life come crashing down, don’t they? Deadlines, family responsibilities, unexpected crises, you name it. It can feel overwhelming.
But then I thought about something fascinating. No matter how wild the surface of the ocean gets—even during a hurricane—the bottom of the sea remains calm. Quiet. Steady.
And it got me thinking: Are you living like the calm bottom of the sea? Or are you getting tossed around by the storm above?
I know it’s easier said than done, but here’s how I’ve been learning to stay grounded when life feels out of control.
First off, mornings matter. How you start your day sets the tone for everything else. On especially chaotic days, I lean into something I learned from Robin Sharma’s The 5 AM Club—the 20-20-20 rule.
It’s simple:
20 minutes of movement: Whether it’s a quick jog, yoga, or even just a dance party in your living room—get your body moving!
20 minutes of reflection: Journal, pray, meditate—anything that helps you clear the mental clutter.
20 minutes of learning: Read a book, listen to a podcast, or watch a TED Talk. Feed your brain with something uplifting or useful.
This morning, I followed the 20-20-20 routine. By 7:05 AM, I already felt calm, clear-headed, and ready to take on the day.
Here’s another nugget: when chaos is swirling, remind yourself of your “floor”—your foundation. For me, it’s gratitude and faith. No matter how wild things get, I can return to those constants.
Ask yourself: What keeps you steady? Is it your family, your faith, your fitness routine? Whatever it is, lean on it. Because when you focus on what’s solid, the turbulence above starts to matter a whole lot less.
Last week, I had a whirlwind of commitments—10 podcast interviews in a single day, prepping for a live event, handling life’s curveballs (looking at you, car rental company). By the end, I was spent. And you know what? That’s okay.
Not every day has to be perfect. Not every moment has to be productive. Sometimes staying grounded means giving yourself permission to rest, reset, and let the waves crash without fighting them.
Take a moment today to check in with yourself:
Are you living like the surface waves, or the calm sea floor?
What’s one simple habit—like 20-20-20—you can start to stay grounded?
How can you give yourself a little grace this week?
Remember, my friends: You don’t have to control the storm. You just have to stay anchored.
Much love,
Greg
