Inertia vs. Momentum: The Harsh Reality Most Business Owners Don’t Talk About

Let’s talk about taking a break.

Because I know someone reading this right now is feeling like they’re running on fumes — mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually — and they’re thinking…

“Maybe I just need to step away for a bit.”

And listen, I get it.
I’ve been there. I’ve had seasons where I needed to throttle back. Times when my body gave me the warning signs… and a few times when it forced me to stop.

But I’ve also learned this:
There’s a difference between taking a pause and killing your momentum.

And if you’re building a business right now — especially if you’re still fighting to get traction — you need to understand the difference.

Because there are two invisible forces at play every single day in your business and life:

👉 Inertia
👉 Momentum

Inertia will keep you stuck.

Momentum will move your life forward.

Inertia says:

“An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.”

Momentum says:

“An object in motion will stay in motion — unless something gets in its way.”

You with me?

So when you’ve been showing up…
Building your audience…
Posting content…
Talking to leads…
Serving your clients…

That’s momentum. Even if you’re not seeing results yet — you’re building energy.

But when you step back too long?

You go from momentum → to inertia.
And starting back up again? Man… it takes 10x the effort.

I’ve seen it in my workouts.

Just wrapped a Peloton ride this morning — and the app told me I’m on a 183-week streak.

That’s nearly 3.5 years of doing something every single week.

Now hear me out — I’ve had COVID three times in that stretch.
Closed on houses. Got sick. Built businesses. Had to travel. Life happened.

But I still moved.
Some weeks, it was a 30-minute ride. Other weeks, just a walk or stretching.

But I did something — because I refused to let go of the momentum.

I’ve seen it in business, too.

There’ve been seasons where I couldn’t go full throttle.
But I never pulled the plug.
I never ghosted my team.
I never said, “See y’all in a few months.”

Why?

Because I’m not about to put my community — or my future — at the mercy of inertia.

And neither should you.

Even a little “pause” can be dangerous if you don’t know how to restart.

And let’s be honest…

Most of you reading this are still trying to escape the grind of trading time for money.
Still trying to build your 168 vehicle.
Still trying to pay off the mountain of student debt.

You don’t have time to sit in the parking lot.

You need to keep moving.

So what do you do when you need a break?

You scale back, not shut down.

✅ Maybe you cut your posts to 3x/week.
✅ Maybe you do 1-hour of deep work instead of 5.
✅ Maybe you take a week off from selling — but still stay present.

But you don’t go silent.

Because every time you “check out,” you risk killing the momentum you’ve spent months building.

And momentum is expensive.

It takes sweat, energy, consistency, and belief to get it back.

So even if it’s a whisper — keep your voice in the game.

Final word: Take care of yourself. But don’t quit on yourself.

You’re not just building a business.

You’re building trust.
You’re building freedom.
You’re building a future for your family that isn’t tied to a clinic schedule.

So take care of your health.
But protect your momentum, too.

Because that momentum?
It’s what will carry you across the finish line — long after the motivation runs out.

Stay in motion.

Much love,
Greg Todd
