Good morning, my friends. If you’re anything like me, you’ve had those days where you know you’ve got to do something, but man, it just feels too painful. You know what I’m talking about? You’ve got that task you need to tackle, that thing you’ve been putting off. You know it’s important, but just thinking about doing it makes you want to crawl back into bed. Sound familiar?
Let me tell you something that hit me this morning—pain is real, but it’s temporary. I was reminded of this yesterday when I was working on moving back into my house. For the first time in four weeks, we were finally able to sleep in our own beds. Now, don’t get me wrong, the process of putting everything back together wasn’t fun. Moving furniture, dealing with repairs, handling all the little things… it was tough. But today, I don’t remember all that pain. What I remember is the joy of being back home.
Whether it’s pushing through a tough workout, rebuilding your life, or making that difficult phone call—you know, the one you’ve been dreading—it hurts at the moment. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t last. That’s the trick about pain. It feels like it’s going to stick around forever when you’re in the middle of it, but a few hours, days, or weeks later, it’s gone. What does last is the progress you make.
Think about the last tough workout you did. It hurt, right? Your muscles burned, your body ached, and you probably questioned why you even started in the first place. But three weeks later? You don’t remember the pain of that workout. You don’t wake up each day still feeling the soreness from a workout you did two years ago. But the strength you gained from pushing through? That sticks with you.
It’s the same with anything hard in life. There are things you need to do today that are going to be painful. Maybe it’s reaching out to that client who never responds. Maybe it’s hitting “record” on that video you’ve been avoiding because you don’t want to see yourself on screen. Maybe it’s sending that email, knowing there’s a chance you might hear crickets in response.
And guess what? It’s going to be uncomfortable in the moment. You might feel rejected or embarrassed, and it might sting for a little while. But here’s the good news: that sting fades. A few hours later, you’ll barely remember it. Six hours later, it’s a distant memory. What will stick with you is the feeling of knowing you took action, the progress you made.
Yesterday, I was reminded of how good it feels to push through pain and come out on the other side. It feels great to be back in my home. It feels even better to look around and see what my family and I accomplished. We didn’t let the hard stuff stop us, and now, here we are, reaping the benefits.
So, if there’s something hard staring you in the face today, just do it. Yes, it’ll be painful in the moment, but that pain won’t last. What will last is the progress you make. The satisfaction of knowing you pushed through something tough—that’s what will stick with you.
Pain is just a moment. Progress is forever. Don’t let the discomfort stop you from moving forward. You’ve got this.
